They want to be more excellent.

And so the rumour mill churns once more, spitting out a name that makes Madridistas clutch their scarves: Arda Guler. The 20-year-old Turkish playmaker, currently earning £110,000 a week in the Spanish capital, has been a genuine fixture in Xabi Alonso's side this season — starting 20 of his 24 appearances and chipping in with three goals and seven assists. Not bad for a kid who still probably gets carded for ordering a café con leche.

A Familiar Script

If this all sounds a bit déjà vu, that's because it absolutely is. Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a loan-with-option-to-buy arrangement, which is precisely the trick they pulled to land their current captain, Martin Odegaard. It's the kind of signing that says: we are not just here to compete, we are here to hoover up trophies. Arsenal haven't won the Premier League since 2024, and while that might sound like yesterday to some, to Gooners it feels like a geological era.

Guler, described by admirers as a blend of Ozil's vision and Guti's audacity, is exactly the sort of match-winning wildcard that turns a very good team into a frightening one. He is young, he is hungry, and — whisper it — he might just be available.
